El Gouna had its beginnings in one man’s search to find the most beautiful spot on the seaside to build a house and small boat jetty.. Twenty five years ago Samih Sawiris, chairman of Orascom Development, El Gouna’s parent company, found that beautiful spot, conveniently located just north of Hurghada on the west coast of the Red Sea.
It wasn’t long before Sawiris’ friends, struck by the splendor of the azure waters and dramatic backdrop of mountains, asked to join him. And the town slowly blossomed into the vibrant community it is today.

Environment
El Gouna has been officially recognized as Egypt’s most environmentally-friendly holiday destination.
El Gouna management has worked hard in cooperation with local hotels, businesses, residents and visitors to maintain, protect, and preserve its unique environment. The town’s environmental programs and grassroots environmental organization paved the way for several awards, including the Green Globe and Travel life, and led to El Gouna’s selection as the pilot location for the Green Star Hotel Initiative.
Global Green City award: El Gouna is honored to be the first destination in Africa and the Arab Region to receive the Global Green City Award in August 2014. Sponsored by the United Nations Environment Program, this award is handed to cities displaying substantial measures and efforts in progress within the field of environmental sustainability.
About El Gouna:
•El Gouna had organized before a golf competitions, it also has a hospital and schools and a small airport that serve the resort and private jets and charter plans.
•El Gouna also houses a small museum with some 90 exhibits (including statue replicas and an exhibition hall of contemporary Egyptian paintings by Hussein Bikar ) which opened in 1996.
•El Gouna also contains three marinas: Abydos marina, the Abu Tig Marina and the Abu Tig Marina Extension, which can receive super yachts.
